Details

There are MDF options to suit all budgets and requirements, but thankfully our standard grade MDF is more affordable than solid lumber and delivers excellent properties that you would expect to get from a solid piece.

Most commonly used in construction or DIY, our standard grade MDF sheets deliver phenomenal properties in strength and durability such as for wall panelling and shelving in closets.

Boasting a consistently smooth surface, standard grade MDF is perfect for use in furniture; flooring; shelving, cabinets, or wall panelling as is easily customised to suit numerous different projects. As a result of this, our standard grade MDF is easy to fabricate, drill, or affix with screws, nails or glues.

Our standard grade MDF is now available to be Primed on one, or both sides of your sheet making our standard grade MDF ideal for painting. For more information on what MDF to choose for your project, see our Guide ‘Choosing the Right MDF’.

Additionally, the light and smooth surface make it easy to mark up for cutting or sanding down, and it can be cut to various shapes and forms with ease using an electric saw, router, or handsaw. Please note that when cutting MDF, appropriate protection must be worn due to the dust particles MDF can create.

Our standard grade MDF is ranked with the Euroclass D Fire Rating, though if you require MDF to prevent the spread of fire, please see our Flame Retardant MDF which can prevent the spread of fire by up to half an hour.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does MDF stand for?

MDF stands for medium-density fibreboard and is an engineered wood-based sheet made by bonding together wood fibres with a synthetic resin adhesive and pressure.

Can I cut MDF by hand?

It is possible to customise your MDF sheeting by cutting it into shape and is a fabulous way to get it to fit around any nook and crannies in your home. We have written a guide for cutting MDF yourself, or we can do it for you, just let us know before placing an order.

How strong is MDF?

MDF is not very strong as it is a compression of multiple fibres, however, it is very dense, and is very durable. As a rule, if you require a sheet to hold a large weight, order a larger thickness, or contact us and we can assist you directly.

Can I paint on MDF?

Often chosen for its inexpensive cost to create furniture, MDF can be painted to add some character or personality to any piece. We have written a guide to assist you in painting your MDF.

Can you waterproof MDF?

You can create waterproof MDF by adding a high-quality wood sealant, varnish or stain or moisture-resistant paint so that your project can withstand threats of moisture and humidity. For applying any paint of coating please see our paint guide.

What are the best screws for MDF?

To screw into MDF you will require specific screws to prevent splitting. We recommend using screws that are purposely made for MDF as generic screws may damage the sheeting.

Does MDF warp?

MDF is prone to warping and bending when moisture is concerned. That could be as a result of liquid affecting the sheet, or even from an uneven temperature causing bowing and warping.
