Details

Our flame retardant MDF sheets are well-suited for use in environments for extra fire protection to comply with building regulations. From schools, hospitals or offices, our fire-retardant MDF sheets will provide more time in the event of a fire, by slowing down the spread, aiding escape.

Fire retardant MDF is suitable for internal dry situations, for non-structural applications, ideal for use in wall linings, partitions, display panels, or in commercial buildings to slow the spread of fire.

Our flame retardant MDF is specifically designed to slow the spread of fire for up to 30 minutes, giving it the Euroclass C Fire Rating.

As an inexpensive option, flame retardant MDF is a popular and adaptable material that is made up of small strands of mixed hard and softwoods, combined with resins and wax to produce a hard-wearing but lightweight panel.

Additionally, our sheets take well to most adhesives and paints, so it’s great for customising for different projects, and it’s easy to fabricate and fix with screws, nails or glues. For more information on how best to utilise MDF in your next project, check out our guide for choosing the right MDF

Features

Versatile

Flame retardant MDF is a popular and adaptable material that is made up of small strands of mixed hard and softwoods, combined with resins and wax to produce a hard-wearing but lightweight panel.

Lightweight

Due to the small strands that construct the sheet, our flame retardant MDF is ideal for use in environments where safety is key, as this sheet is light to install and fit.

Malleable

As our flame retardant MDF takes well to most adhesives and paints, this makes it an ideal solution for those looking to utilise the flame retardant properties, while maintaining a specific aesthetic.

Inexpensive

Compared to alternate forms of flameproofing, our flame retardant MDF provides an inexpensive solution for fire protection.

Customisable

Our flame retardant MDF takes well to being machined and cut, meaning that we are able to customise your sheet to fit any spaces that you wish to flameproof.

Flame Retardant

With a slight pink tint, our flame retardant MDF sheets are Euroclass C grade, giving you up to 30 minutes of flame retardant properties. Please note that should you consider coating your sheet in paint, you should check that the coating will not adversely affect the flame retardant properties.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is flame retardant material?

Fire-retardant materials are designed to burn slowly. Our MDF sheets are designed to resist burning and withstand heat for up to 30 minutes. An example of a fire-resistant wood is one that is used in ceilings or doors to slow the spread of a fire.

Does MDF warp with heat?

MDF wood does not warp or crack. However, MDF does expand and contracts when there are fluctuations in temperature and humidity but it will not warp.

Does MDF burn easily?

Flame retardant MDF is specially designed to slowly burn. Our high-quality flame retardant MDF slows the spread of fire for up to 30 minutes.

Is MDF fire resistant?

Our flame retardant MDF are non-loading bearing sheets with improved properties at resisting fire spreading. Our boards have a C fire rating and can slow the spread of fire for up to 30 minutes.

Is MDF more flammable than wood?

MDF is flammable but difficult to ignite. Flame retardant MDF also slows the spread of the fire. Dust from wood may ignite at temperatures greater than 204ºC and when in a high concentration in the air may spontaneously explode.

Is MDF stronger than plywood?

MDF is ideal for cutting, machining and drilling since it does not chip easily. Comparably, plywood is a stronger material and can be used for doors, floors, staircases and outdoor furniture.

Are there different grades of MDF?

Most MDF can be broken down into four categories: Lightweight MDF, Standard Grade MDF & High-Density MDF or Veneered MDF. We sell Standard Grade and veneered MDF.

Which is cheaper, MDF or plywood?

Medium-density fiberboard (MDF) is generally cheaper than plywood, but it is not as hard and can sag under heavyweight. MDF doesn't handle moisture very well, either, so it is more suited for indoor use, such as in furniture.

Can you screw into MDF?

As MDF is denser than most woods, manufacturers recommend only the highest quality tools be used to machine it. MDF panels do hold screws as well as most natural woods but do drill a pilot hole first.

What does MDF stand for?

MDF stands for medium-density fibreboard and is an engineered wood-based sheet made by bonding together wood fibres with a synthetic resin adhesive and pressure.

Can I cut MDF by hand?

It is possible to customise your MDF sheeting by cutting it into shape and is a fabulous way to get it to fit around any nook and crannies in your home. We have written a guide for cutting MDF yourself, or we can do it for you, just let us know before placing an order.

How strong is MDF?

MDF is not very strong as it is a compression of multiple fibres, however, it is very dense, and is very durable. As a rule, if you require a sheet to hold a large weight, order a larger thickness, or contact us and we can assist you directly.

Can I paint on MDF?

Often chosen for its inexpensive cost to create furniture, MDF can be painted to add some character or personality to any piece. We have written a guide to assist you in painting your MDF.
